Our Values Innovation

Innovation at Kömmerling

Innovation at Kömmerling

Solutions that create added value today—and stand the test of time tomorrow.

For Kömmerling, innovation means not following every trend.

Innovation means developing the right solutions for real-world needs: for window manufacturers, architects, and planners; for building owners and investors; and for people who want to live and work in high-quality buildings for the long term.

As a system provider, we always approach innovation from the perspective of the application. A window is not simply a building component. It protects against cold, heat, wind, rain, noise, and break-ins. It contributes to a building’s energy efficiency. It shapes architecture, comfort, and quality of life. And it must function reliably for many years. This is precisely where innovation begins at Kömmerling: with the challenges our customers face every day—in consulting, in planning, in manufacturing, on the construction site, and in the finished building.

What we mean by innovation

Innovation at Kömmerling is not an end in itself. For us, a new solution is only a true innovation if it creates clear added value: It improves the quality of the finished window. It simplifies the fabrication process for window manufacturers. It increases the building’s energy efficiency. It expands design and styling options. It reduces material usage, complexity, or installation effort. It enables greater circular economy and resource conservation. Or it opens up new market opportunities for our partners.

That’s why innovation at Kömmerling is always customer-centric. We don’t just develop profiles, finishes, or systems. We develop solutions to the challenges facing our industry.

Progress has a long tradition at Kömmerling

Innovation at Kömmerling is not a short-term trend, but an integral part of our company's history. In 1954, the company that is now Kömmerling developed the world's first serially produced PVC-U window profile. Since then, technical advancements, new materials and continuously improved performance have shaped our work.

Whether PVC-U-aluminium composite profiles, lead-free formulations, high-recycled-content systems or bio-attributed PVC, many developments that are now widely established were driven forward by Kömmerling at an early stage. Our ambition is not only to rethink solutions, but to implement them reliably in industrial practice.

Innovation for better windows

The most important task of our systems is to lay the foundation for high-quality windows, doors, and sliding solutions. That is why we continuously refine our profile systems—with a focus on thermal insulation, stability, security, sound insulation, design, durability, and recyclability.

One example of this is Kömmerling WarmCore. The system combines a thermally insulating PVC core with a sturdy aluminum surface. This creates a hybrid system that intelligently combines the advantages of both materials: the energy efficiency and insulation performance of PVC with the high-quality, precise, and architecturally sought-after look of aluminum.

This example in particular illustrates how Kömmerling approaches innovation: not as a technical gimmick, but as a solution to a specific conflict of objectives in the market. Many builders and architects desire the clean, high-quality look of aluminum. At the same time, demands for energy efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness are rising. Kömmerling WarmCore brings these requirements together, thereby creating new opportunities for window manufacturers, architects, and end customers.

Better performance – Generation after Generation

A key driver of our innovation activities is the continuous improvement of energy efficiency. Since the first PVC-U windows, our development and engineering teams have continuously optimised the thermal insulation performance of our profile systems.

This is clearly reflected in the Uf value. From an initial value of 2.2 W/m²K, selected profile solutions now achieve values of up to 0.70 W/m²K, meeting passive house standards. Modern profile systems therefore make an important contribution to energy-efficient construction and renovation.

For us, innovation means more than achieving improved performance values. What matters is that technical improvements prove themselves in practice – for fabricators, planners and building owners.

Kömmerling WarmCore

Two materials. One integrated system solution for modern architecture.

Kömmerling WarmCore demonstrates how innovation is born at Kömmerling: The starting point is not technical innovation for its own sake, but a specific market need. Architects and building owners want a high-quality aluminum look, combined with solutions that meet requirements for energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and design flexibility. To achieve this, WarmCore combines a thermally optimized PVC-U core with an aluminum cladding on both the inside and outside, bringing these requirements together in a single system platform for window, door, and sliding solutions.

Fit For Future

Innovation for window manufacturers

Our customers are primarily window manufacturers. That’s why, for us, innovation doesn’t begin with the installed window, but rather during production and on the construction site. We ask ourselves: How can our systems be designed so they can be processed efficiently? How can we simplify installation processes? How can we reduce complexity without neglecting market requirements? How can we help window manufacturers produce more reliably, quickly, and cost-effectively?

This is precisely where our approach to system development comes into play. Our products are designed not only to deliver excellent technical performance but also to function effectively in everyday use. This includes well-thought-out installation guidelines, dimensionally accurate profiles, reliable system logic, practical accessory solutions, and high compatibility within the system ecosystem.

One example of this is Fit For Future. Kömmerling SmartHome transforms the traditional window into a digital security and comfort system. This innovative system solution creates new opportunities for consultation and cross-selling for specialty retailers and offers end customers modular, expandable features related to security, comfort, and modern building technology.

However, the foundation for such innovations is laid much earlier - namely, during the development of materials and formulations.

Innovation starts with the material

Many innovations at Kömmerling begin with the material itself. More than 20 years ago, we introduced greenline and completely switched to lead-free stabilisers – an important step towards greater responsibility in profile development.

Kömmerling also set early benchmarks in the use of recycled materials. As early as 2010, one of our profiles received recognition for containing more than 50 % recycled material. Today, solutions such as ReFrame, featuring a profile core made from 100 % recycled PVC-U, and MultiCore, using 100 % recycled PVC-U as an alternative to steel reinforcement, demonstrate how circularity and technical performance can be successfully combined.

With profiles made from bio-attributed PVC, Kömmerling has taken another important step in material development. The material reduces the use of fossil resources without changing the proven technical properties of PVC-U.

Innovation in materials and surfaces

For many years, Kömmerling has stood for expertise in materials. This expertise is a fundamental basis for our innovative strength. After all, many of the future challenges facing our industry can only be addressed through better materials, smarter formulations, and more durable surfaces.

One example is Kömmerling AcrylColor. This process permanently bonds a homogeneous, colored PMMA surface to the plastic profile. The result is a durable surface with high color brilliance, weather resistance, and durability. With this, Kömmerling is responding to a clear market trend: windows and doors are increasingly viewed as design elements. Color, surface, and design are becoming more important—but they must not come at the expense of quality, ease of maintenance, and durability.

proCoverTec is another example of innovative strength in surface technology. A special coating process using an innovative paint ensures colours that remain beautiful and vibrant over time, combining a high-quality appearance with long-lasting surface quality. It is particularly evident when used in conjunction with ReFrame how innovation, quality, sustainability and trust work together: a profile body made from 100 % recycled PVC-U is combined with a high-quality surface finish, thus linking the circular economy with consistently high product quality.

Surface innovation as a visible benefit in terms of quality and design

Colour as a lasting material quality - not just a surface feature.

With AcrylColor and proCoverTec, Kömmerling is consistently advancing the development of its surfaces. These innovative technologies combine long-lasting colour quality, high durability, and modern design into a lasting hallmark of quality. In this way, the surface itself becomes a vehicle for innovation and helps ensure that windows retain their value and premium appearance for many years. This creates visible added value, particularly for architects, builders, and end customers, for whom windows are increasingly a defining design element of the building envelope.

Innovation for the circular economy and new raw materials

ReFrame is a particularly strong testament to Kömmerling’s innovative strength. It demonstrates that the circular economy is not merely an environmental goal but can also be achieved through technically and aesthetically sophisticated solutions. Old windows are returned to the material cycle, processed into PVC granulate, and extruded into new window and door profiles. At the same time, technical properties such as thermal insulation and design flexibility are preserved.

With bio-attributed PVC, Kömmerling is taking another step toward sustainable material development. Here, fossil-based raw materials are replaced by renewable alternatives. This demonstrates that innovation arises not only in the finished product but also in the upstream value chain. The key is to integrate new raw material solutions in a way that preserves quality, workability, and recyclability.

Kömmerling ReFrame

A new approach to the circular economy. 100 % recycled material in the profile core with a high-quality surface finish.

With ReFrame, Kömmerling is consistently developing the circular economy into a marketable product system. Profile cores made from 100 % recycled PVC-U combine high-quality technical properties with the innovative proCoverTec surface. This ensures a durable, UV-resistant and robust surface, without compromising on design or colour variety. In this way, a closed-loop material cycle is transformed into a visible product innovation.

Kömmerling ReFrame

Bio-attributed PVC

A new raw material base. Proven quality without compromise.

With bio-attributed PVC, Kömmerling is consistently advancing the development of PVC-U as a material. Renewable tall oil-based raw materials replace fossil resources, whilst the proven technical properties, processability and recyclability are fully retained. This enables CO₂ emissions during the manufacturing process to be reduced by over 90 % compared with PVC made from fossil-based raw materials by the same manufacturer. The result is a sustainable raw material base without compromising on quality or performance.

For Kömmerling, innovation also means harnessing digital and new technological possibilities. This applies to consulting, planning, quotation processes, manufacturing, services, and new forms of production.

Digital solutions such as online quoting channels, energy-saving calculators, planning software, BIM tools, and service tools help our partners provide better advice to customers, streamline processes, and boost market success. As a result, innovation is evident not only in the product itself but throughout the entire value chain.

A current example of new technological possibilities is Kömmerling PrintFlow. With this PVC filament for 3D printing, Kömmerling is opening up new avenues for prototypes, custom components, small-batch production, and technical applications. Additive manufacturing can help companies become more flexible and efficient, particularly in the development, prototyping, and rapid implementation of new ideas.

Innovation with responsibility

Kömmerling does not develop innovations in isolation. For us, innovation, quality, and sustainability are always interconnected. A new solution must be technically mature. It must meet our quality standards. It must provide real benefits for our customers. And, wherever possible, it should contribute to resource conservation, energy efficiency, or the circular economy.

That is why innovation at Kömmerling always goes hand in hand with responsibility. We do not rush products to market simply because a topic is trending. We develop solutions designed to function over the long term. After all, windows and doors are durable building products. They must provide reliable protection, save energy, and look good for many years—and, at the end of their life cycle, be returned to the material cycle as much as possible.

 Innovation built on proven expertise

At Kömmerling, new solutions are not developed in isolation, but through close collaboration with partners, the scientific community, and recognised testing and research institutes. For relevant product developments, we work with organisations such as ift Rosenheim and the Passive House Institute. This ensures that the latest scientific findings, regulatory requirements and practical market experience are incorporated directly into our product development.
